A strong, sudden odor in a wall, attic or crawlspace usually means an animal has died inside. We find it, remove it, clean the area and seal the way in.
Animals that get into a home sometimes die in hard-to-reach places: inside wall voids, under insulation, in crawlspaces, under decks or in ductwork. The odor usually gets worse for several days, and flies may appear. Public-health agencies advise against handling dead animals with bare hands, so it's a job worth leaving to someone with the right protective gear.
We locate the source, remove the animal and any contaminated material, sanitize and deodorize the area, and bag everything for proper disposal. If we have to open a small section of drywall or ceiling to reach it, we'll explain that first.
Most importantly, we figure out how the animal got in and seal that opening, so you aren't dealing with the same problem next season. If anyone has had contact with the animal, or with a bat, contact a healthcare provider or the NM Department of Health.
