Squirrels in the Attic: New Mexico Guide

Tree squirrels and rock squirrels are both common in Northern New Mexico. Tree squirrels get into attics through the roofline. Rock squirrels burrow along foundations and walls.

Signs

Scampering in the attic in the early morning and late afternoon (rodents tend to be more active at night), chewed fascia or vents, and burrows along foundations and patios.

Health awareness

The NM Department of Health lists rock squirrels among the rodents involved in plague in New Mexico. Don't handle squirrels, especially sick or dead ones.

Humane solution

One-way doors on active openings, chew-proof sealing for every other gap, and a check for young before the final seal. Squirrels can have more than one litter a year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use foam to seal squirrel holes?

No. Squirrels chew through foam. Use metal flashing, hardware cloth and exterior-grade materials.

Why do I hear them in the morning?

Squirrels are active during the day, so you'll usually hear them early and late.

Do you handle rock squirrels under patios?

Yes. We use buried mesh barriers and exclusion around foundations.
